Canoemobile: Bringing Environmental Literacy to Urban Youth in Cities Across America

Canoemobile circa 2012      Bookmobile, circa 1956      LA Bookmobile  circa 1936

Remember the Bookmobiles that existed before the age of Kindle and iPads? We’ve borrowed that concept and developed the Canoemobile—a traveling fleet of six, 24’ Voyageur canoes that rove the countryside and get people out paddling on their local urban waterways.

In 2010, in cooperation with a number of federal and local partners, we developed a week-long canoeing program in Washington DC on the Anacostia River serving 1,000 DC Area school children. It went so well that we decided to do it on a regular basis. Typically, we take people on their local waterways for 1-3 hour paddles and work with various partners to enrich the experience. In 2012, we added seven cities to the Canoemobile itinerary on a six week tour. These events are a great way for communities to explore their local resources and connect with like minded people and groups to get kids outdoors.

We're all in this boat together! Help support youth getting outdoors in your city: Milwaukee, Chicago, Indiana, Louisville, Cincinnati, NYC, Washington DC
