Discover the national park that exists right in the heart of the Twin Cities, the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. The Mississippi River has been used by people for food, trade, and water for thousands of years. This is truly is an “urban wilderness” corridor providing the opportunity to experience nature in a metropolitan area. Running beneath limestone bluffs, past sandy beaches and towering cottonwood trees, the river and its spring-watered bluffs and flood plain forests once again provide habitat for hundreds of species of birds, fish, endangered mussels, and even rare river otters. Canoeing past the places and ruins that remain from the fur trade, Fort Snelling, and the milling industries is the best way to understand how the river has defined the human story of this place.
